“Farmers” Markets

Nicollet Mall has its second week of the 2010 Farmers Market today. But most of the stalls aren’t real Minnesota farmers. Stay away from any vendor that has pineapples and oranges, at any time of the summer. I’m pretty confident all those folks go to the SuperValu warehouse and buy the same produce you can get at one of their stores.

I love the stalls that sell a variety of only one item, like the pickle guy. Or the honey or herbs people. Those are genuine business-owners that we should be supporting. Not that the folks hawking grapes don’t deserve support, but I’ll go out of my way to find a reason to buy local honey over a pineapple.

It’s for this reason I prefer the Mill City Market on Saturday mornings, by the Guthrie. They have even more Minnesota-specific products, like fresh pork and homemade baskets. Support your local economy, dudes.
